The role of starch in feed

The Role Of Starch In Feed

The role of feed in starch starch is the main carbohydrate source in animal feed, which can provide energy demand for animal growth.

Adsorption property and its application (filler)

Starch can be used as a diluent (or filler) in feed additive products to fill and disperse the active ingredients in feed additive products to increase their weight or volume, facilitate the formation and dispersion of preparations, and further make powders, granules and pellets.

When starch is used as a diluent, corn starch is more commonly used. Its properties are very stable, and it has no effect with most components. Its price is also relatively cheap, and its hygroscopicity is small, and its appearance is good. In actual production, it is often mixed with other fillers or diluents, such as calcium carbonate, corn cob powder, bran powder, etc., which can further reduce the cost and use effect of the product.

Solubility, gelatinization and adhesion (adhesive)

Starch granules are insoluble in cold water, damaged starch or chemically modified starch can be soluble in cold water, but the swelling starch after dissolution is irreversible. With the rise of temperature, the swelling degree and solubility of starch increase, and the starch particles suddenly expand rapidly with the increase of temperature, and the volume can reach dozens or even hundreds of times of the original, and the suspension becomes a translucent viscous colloid solution, which is called starch gelatinization. The gelatinized starch has adhesive property, and is often used as the adhesive in the preparation of feed additive products

Swelling capacity (disintegrant)

When the starch milk is heated, the starch particles will swell. For different kinds of starch, the swelling capacity of granules is different. The starch milk sample is heated in a water bath at a certain temperature for 30 minutes, then centrifuged, the supernatant is poured out, and the precipitated particles are weighed. The ratio of the weight of the precipitated particles after starch expansion to the weight of the original dry starch is called swelling capacity.

Disintegrants: Disintegrants are substances that rapidly break tablets into small particles in gastrointestinal fluid. In addition to slow (controlled) release tablets and some tablets for special purposes, disintegrants should be added to general tablets.
